* Monitor the asphalt’s surface during rolling for signs of compaction, such as decreased rutting and increased density.
* Use compaction testing equipment, such as nuclear density gauges, to measure the asphalt’s density and ensure it meets required specifications.

Compaction Goals

Effective compaction aims to achieve the following:

* Increase the asphalt’s density, enhancing its load-bearing capacity and durability.
* Reduce voids and air pockets, minimizing water penetration and subsequent pavement failures.
* Create a smooth and uniform surface, improving ride quality and reducing the risk of tire wear.

Factors Influencing Compaction

* Asphalt Temperature: Higher temperatures promote compaction efficiency.
* Thickness: Thicker layers require more passes and higher compaction effort.
* Aggregate Size: Larger aggregates require longer rolling times.
* Equipment Selection: The appropriate roller type and settings are essential for achieving the desired compaction.
